Last week I gave a corporate wellness seminar called Deep Level Self-Care for Self-Care Awareness Month. It’s quickly become one of my favorite topics—not only in speaking, but in my own life and in my podcast, Love You More, where I explore what it really means to care for ourselves in sustainable, life-giving ways.

If there’s one deceptively simple but powerful question we can all ask ourselves, it’s this:

What do I need right now?

We are so used to asking this about others—especially if we’re caregivers of children, or aging parents or work in service roles like teachers, nurses or therapists. I often think back to when my kids were little and couldn’t yet talk. I was constantly mind-reading their cues: Is he hungry? Is it time for a nap? Is the environment too stimulating? I was tuned in to their needs in real time.

But when it comes to ourselves, we seem to “outgrow” this skill—or maybe we’re trained out of it. We wait until our bladder is bursting, until we’re HANGRY, or until we collapse on the couch at 9 PM. By then, it’s the late-warning. We have ignored the many whispers along the way.

BBQ Sweet Potato Casserole: Sweet potatoes are one of my favorite comfort foods, and pairing them with BBQ flavors makes this casserole both cozy and unique. Perfect for a hearty meatless meal of the week!

Learning to Listen Through the Body

One of the most powerful practices I’ve adopted over the past three years is something called the Feldenkrais Method. (Check out Love You More podcast Ep: 17, 48 & 61 of the podcast to hear more from my own teacher, Sandy.) I often introduce this method to clients who come in complaining of pain or tension.
