Last winter, my oldest son had a skiing accident that led to a concussion—a fall that initially didn’t seem so serious but quickly proved otherwise. After the fall, he was visibly confused and disoriented, not knowing where he was or even his name. It was a surreal and scary moment. Thankfully, his confusion cleared quickly, and we sought medical attention. Like any parent (and dietitian!), I was motivated to learn more about the role of nutrition in concussion recovery, so today I’m sharing where the current evidence stands. Before I jump in, much the research has been conducted in adults, so it’s important to keep that in mind. This is especially important when considering doses of an omega-3 supplement/creatine powder, etc.
