The Story Behind My Choice
I still remember my last drink: an extra dirty martini on the rocks at a holiday party. It wasn’t even my party—it was one of my husband’s work events. I took four sips, set it down on the mantle, and walked away.
I didn’t think, “This will be my last drink.” But somewhere inside, I think I knew.
When I quit drinking the next day, December 17, almost three years ago, I wasn’t drinking much by most people’s standards—maybe five or six drinks a month. But my relationship with alcohol had been a cycle many will recognize: drink more than I liked, pull back, stop, start again. Round and round.
What shifted wasn’t a rock bottom. It was realizing that not drinking at all was actually easier. The freedom was in the absence.
That doesn’t mean I think alcohol is “bad” or that no one should drink. Plenty of people have a healthy relationship with it. But for me, the benefits—steadier energy, calmer mood, being comfortable as the only one not drinking, setting an example for my kids—outweighed the occasional cocktail.
And maybe the biggest gift? It opened the door to support other women who are curious about their own relationship with alcohol.
Which brings me to Sober October. Taking even one month away from alcohol can lead to better sleep, more energy, and even measurable health improvements. (I wrote more about that in a past Substack post [here].)
I’ve spoken with unfiltered honesty about my sober-curious journey—how it started and where I am now—on the Love You More podcast: (Episodes: 5, 22, 28, 34, 36, 42, 46, 53, 64).
People Are Drinking Less—New Data!
And it’s not just me. What I’ve experienced personally is part of a much bigger cultural shift…the data proves it:
Gallup (July 2025): Only 54% of U.S. adults now drink—the lowest in nearly 90 years.
Younger adults (18–35): Only 50% report drinking—down from 72% in the early 2000s.
For the first time, most Americans (53%) believe moderate drinking is harmful to health.
65% of Gen Z plan to drink less this year; 39% plan to stay alcohol-free entirely.
Why the Shift?
For years we were told a little wine was “heart-healthy.” But new research shows that even low levels of alcohol raise risks for cancers, liver disease, and disrupted sleep. People are starting to connect the dots: moderate drinking isn’t actually a health habit.
Instead, they’re noticing the real benefits of cutting back—clearer mornings, steadier moods, better energy, and more presence in daily life. It’s less about deprivation and more about what you gain when you drink less or not at all.
Why This Gathering Matters
We’re part of a cultural shift. People are drinking less, seeking more. But beyond the data, your experience matters. Your story, your voice, your presence.
And let’s be honest—choosing a different path with alcohol doesn’t always come easy. It helps to be surrounded by others who “get it”—people who are curious, health-minded, and supportive. Community makes the difference between feeling alone and feeling inspired.
That’s what October 7 is about: creating space—together, step by step, without judgment.
✨ See you there? Cheers—to clarity, community, and what comes next.
