I’m contemplating…"better.”

I want to get better at (fill in the blank).

I should be better at (fill in the blank).

It’s New Year’s Eve—a time when culture tells us to reflect on how we can be better. And yes, I fall into it, too. Just yesterday, I said to my husband, “I want to get better at eating more slowly.” “I want to get better at being less judgmental.” I have my own list of things to “better.”

But there’s a part of me—a big part—that says…I’m done with that! And another part that asks: Says who? Who says I need to get better? Whose voice is that? Is it mine, or is it culture’s? Conditioning? Someone else’s voice creeping in?

And even if I do decide to “get better,” is it entirely in my control? Does it always work? How could I possibly know? I don’t even know what will happen five minutes from now. Take this: I might decide, I’m going to eat more slowly. Then my boys interrupt me with 40 “emergency requests,”
