I’m Not Going to Check the Weather
Not really.
I’ll probably still check the weather.
But lately I’ve become interested in why I am checking it.
This summer has felt like an exercise in trying not to drop the ball.
Camp schedules.
Drop-off times.
Pick-up locations.
Check-in codes.
Screen time.
Kids staying up later.
Trying to remember who needs to be where and when.
I can feel my nervous system becoming hypervigilant, as though there is someone here whose job it is to make sure nothing goes wrong.
When that feeling shows up, my instinct is almost always the same: gather more information. Check one more thing. Figure it out before it happens.
Years ago, that instinct sent me somewhere else.
I remember typing a question into Google:
“How do I stop overpreparing?”
At the time, I was getting ready for a presentation. I believed that if I prepared enough, I’d finally feel confident.
What I didn’t realize then was that confidence wasn’t actually what I was seeking.
I was looking for relief from needing things to go a certain way…and from believing it was my job to make sure they did.
